6 MONTHS OF BASIL... £18K SPENT, Is he staying for another 6 months?
Six months, £18,000, and more lessons than any riding manual could teach — that’s the reality of my first half-year with Basil, the once-skinny gelding who galloped straight into my wallet and my heart. 🐴💸
This vlog is a warts-and-all look at our journey so far:
After a nightmare ulcer diagnosis, countless vet visits, and enough gut paste to stock a tack shop, Basil finally scoped all clear. Cue the celebrations… until a “safe” supplement packed with hidden sugar turned him into a turbo-charged kite on our pancake-flat hacking routes. Spooks, spins, and almost unplanned dismounts became the new normal.
Back home in the arena, though, the magic started to return: pole-work clinics, tiny daily breakthroughs, and an unforgettable session in Abbey Farm’s indoor where Basil strutted like a dressage pro (between the occasional over-bend!). We even braved another in-hand show — spoiler: the judge wanted us quicker, but my legs disagreed. 🤦♀️
From rock-bottom confidence in January (one lap in walk was a victory) to cantering circles I can finally sit, we’ve come a long way. July will bring a short holiday for me, groundwork & TRT for Basil, and a fresh plan to cut costs… or at least try.
